6 Days Umbwe Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Elevation: 1,600m to 2,850m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Your journey begins at Umbwe Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trail immediately enters a dense tropical rainforest, offering a rich and immersive natural environment.
The path is narrow, steep, and direct, making this one of the most physically demanding first days on Kilimanjaro. As you ascend, you will pass through thick vegetation with chances to spot monkeys and various bird species.
By late afternoon, you arrive at Umbwe Camp, located deep within the forest. The camp is quiet and remote, providing a true wilderness atmosphere and a strong sense of adventure.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 2,850m to 3,900m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
On the second day, the trail continues its steep ascent as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The scenery becomes more open and dramatic, with expansive views of valleys and ridges.
You will follow a narrow ridge with breathtaking drop-offs, offering some of the most spectacular views on the mountain. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes sparse and the terrain more rugged.
Eventually, the Umbwe Route merges with the Machame Route, leading you to Barranco Camp. Located beneath the famous Barranco Wall, this camp is surrounded by unique alpine vegetation and offers stunning panoramic views.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
The day begins with the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable climb that involves light scrambling. While it may appear intimidating, it is one of the most exciting and rewarding sections of the route.
After reaching the top, you are rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding landscapes. The trail then descends into valleys before gradually ascending again toward Karanga Camp.
This shorter day is important for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, you will have time to rest and prepare for the final stages of the climb.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
This day involves a steady climb through the alpine desert zone toward Barafu Camp. The terrain is dry, rocky, and exposed, with minimal vegetation and increasing wind conditions.
Barafu Camp is located on a narrow ridge and serves as the base camp for the summit attempt. Upon arrival, you will have an early dinner and rest for a few hours.
Your guides will brief you on the summit climb, emphasizing pacing, safety, and mental preparation. Proper rest is crucial as you prepare for the midnight ascent.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit) → 3,100m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
The summit attempt begins around midnight. This is the most demanding part of the journey, requiring both physical endurance and mental strength.
You will ascend slowly toward Stella Point on the crater rim, where you will witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
Reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement. After a short celebration, you begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
On the final day, you descend through the lush rainforest, enjoying the rich greenery and fresh air as you make your way to Mweka Gate.
Upon arrival, you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificates. This marks the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb.
