6 Days Machame Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your journey begins at Machame Gate, where registration is completed before entering the lush rainforest. The trail winds through dense vegetation with towering trees, hanging moss, and rich biodiversity.

This section is often wet and muddy, but incredibly scenic. As you ascend, you may encounter monkeys and a variety of bird species.

After several hours of steady hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp, located above the forest zone. The air becomes cooler, and you begin to feel the transition into higher altitude environments.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

On the second day, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens up, offering breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau and distant mountain peaks.

The trail becomes steeper in certain sections, but the reward is spectacular scenery and a sense of progress. Unique vegetation such as giant heathers and lobelias dominate this zone.

You arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy panoramic views. This is an important acclimatization stage as your body continues to adjust to the altitude.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840m → 4,630m → 3,900m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

This is a key acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You will ascend to Lava Tower, reaching a higher altitude before descending again.

The landscape transitions into alpine desert, with rocky terrain and minimal vegetation. The hike to Lava Tower can be challenging, but it is essential for helping your body adapt.

After spending some time at high altitude, you descend to Barranco Camp. This camp is one of the most scenic on the mountain, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and surrounded by unique giant senecio plants.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that involves some scrambling. It may look intimidating, but it is safe and manageable with guidance.

Reaching the top rewards you with incredible views of the mountain and surrounding valleys. The trail then descends and ascends through rolling terrain before reaching Karanga Camp.

This is a shorter day designed to support acclimatization, allowing your body to rest and prepare for the summit push.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

On this day, you continue your ascent through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp. The environment becomes more rugged, cold, and windy as you approach high altitude.

Barafu Camp serves as the base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the most challenging part of the climb.

Your guides will provide a detailed briefing, and you will try to sleep before waking up around midnight for the summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit) → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours

The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. This is the most demanding stage of the trek, requiring both physical endurance and mental determination.

You will ascend slowly toward Stella Point, where you will witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Standing at 5,895 meters, reaching the summit is a life-changing achievement. After celebrating and taking photos, you begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, before continuing all the way down to Mweka Gate.

This is a long and challenging day, but it marks the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
