7 Days Rongai Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Elevation: 1,950m to 2,650m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
The adventure begins at Rongai Gate, where registration is completed before entering the trail. You hike through farmland and then into dense rainforest filled with wildlife such as monkeys and birds.
The trail gradually ascends, allowing your body to adjust comfortably to the altitude. Simba Camp, located at the edge of the forest and moorland, offers a peaceful campsite and beautiful sunset views.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Elevation: 2,650m to 3,600m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
The trail continues through open moorland with panoramic views of valleys and ridges. The terrain is rocky, and vegetation becomes sparse. You pass the Second Cave and eventually reach Kikelewa Camp, a serene valley surrounded by giant senecio plants.
This is a crucial day for acclimatization and enjoying the quiet northern side of Kilimanjaro.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
The trail gradually ascends through moorland and into the alpine desert. Mawenzi Tarn Camp lies beneath the towering Mawenzi Peak, offering dramatic rock formations and a small alpine lake.
Optional short hikes for acclimatization are recommended. This is a shorter day to help your body adjust to high altitude.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – Acclimatization Day
Elevation: 4,330m
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours (optional)
This full day is dedicated to acclimatization. Optional hikes to higher elevations allow the body to adjust while still returning to camp to sleep lower.
You also have time to enjoy the unique alpine scenery and relax before the next stage.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Today you cross the vast, barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is rocky, dry, and exposed, with minimal vegetation.
You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Your guides will provide a full briefing on pace, safety, and summit strategy.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m → 4,700m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
The summit push begins around midnight. The climb is slow and steady toward Stella Point, where you witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains.
From Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest.
This day is long and physically demanding but the ultimate reward is reaching the summit.
Day 7: Kibo Hut to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 4,700m → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
On the final day, you descend through alpine desert into moorland and finally rainforest. The trail is scenic and peaceful, allowing reflection on your achievement.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your climb.
