5 Days Marangu Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,870m to 2,700m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, located on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing registration formalities, the trek starts through a lush tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, and rich biodiversity.

This section is alive with nature, offering chances to spot blue monkeys and colobus monkeys swinging through the trees. The trail is well-defined and gradually ascends, making it a comfortable introduction to the climb.

After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a cluster of wooden cabins nestled within the forest. In the afternoon, you may take a short walk to Maundi Crater, where you can enjoy scenic views of northern Tanzania and even glimpses of Kenya on clear days. Dinner and overnight at the hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

On the second day, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically, with giant heathers and open spaces replacing dense forest. The air becomes cooler, and the views expand as you gain altitude.

The trail offers spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, two of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic cones. As you hike, you will notice unique vegetation such as giant lobelias and groundsels, which thrive in this high-altitude environment.

After a steady climb, you reach Horombo Hut, a large and lively camp with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This is a key acclimatization point where trekkers can rest, socialize, and prepare for higher altitudes.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

This day takes you into the alpine desert zone, where the terrain becomes dry, rocky, and more exposed. You will cross the Saddle, a vast, barren stretch of land between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The environment here feels almost otherworldly, with minimal vegetation and wide-open views.

The hike is steady but can feel more demanding due to the altitude. You will arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you will have time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

After an early dinner, your guides will brief you on the night ascent. It is important to rest as much as possible, as you will wake up around midnight for the most challenging part of the climb.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit) → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning under a sky filled with stars. Using headlamps, you will slowly ascend steep and rocky paths toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.

This is the most physically demanding part of the trek, as the combination of altitude, cold temperatures, and fatigue tests your endurance. However, reaching Gilman’s Point rewards you with a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains.

From there, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Standing at 5,895 meters, this iconic summit offers unforgettable views and a deep sense of achievement.

After celebrating your success, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. The descent is long but easier, and reaching lower altitude brings relief and comfort.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your final day begins with a descent through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest. The trail is familiar but offers a new perspective as you descend.

As you return to Marangu Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificates. This marks the end of your incredible journey on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Trekkers who reach Uhuru Peak receive a gold certificate, while those who reach lower points receive a green certificate. Either way, completing this journey is a remarkable achievement.
