6 Days Marangu Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,870m to 2,700m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where registration and park formalities are completed. The trek starts through a dense tropical rainforest filled with tall trees, vibrant plant life, and rich wildlife.

The trail is well-maintained and gradually ascends, making it a comfortable start for trekkers. Along the way, you may encounter blue monkeys and colobus monkeys moving through the forest canopy.

After a steady hike, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a cozy cluster of wooden cabins nestled within the forest. In the afternoon, you can take a short excursion to Maundi Crater, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes. Dinner and overnight at the hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

On this day, you transition from rainforest to moorland. The scenery changes dramatically as the dense forest gives way to open landscapes filled with giant heather and unique high-altitude vegetation.

As you climb higher, you are rewarded with impressive views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The air becomes cooler and thinner, marking your steady progress toward the summit.

After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Horombo Hut, a lively camp with panoramic views. This is an important acclimatization point where trekkers rest and prepare for higher altitudes.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)

Elevation: 3,720m
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours (optional hikes)

This extra day is dedicated to acclimatization, which is crucial for increasing your chances of reaching the summit. You will spend the day at Horombo Hut, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

An optional hike to Zebra Rocks or a higher elevation point is recommended. These short hikes follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle, helping your body adapt more effectively.

This day also provides time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and recover before continuing your ascent. Proper hydration and rest are essential during this stage.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

Leaving Horombo Hut, you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail crosses the Saddle, a vast and barren landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The terrain is dry and exposed, with minimal vegetation. Although the trail is not technically difficult, the altitude makes the hike more demanding.

You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt, which begins later that night. Your guides will provide a detailed briefing on what to expect.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit) → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

The summit attempt begins around midnight. This is the most challenging part of the trek, requiring both physical endurance and mental determination.

You will ascend slowly in the dark toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. As dawn breaks, you will witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains.

From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement and a moment you will never forget.

After celebrating, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your final day involves descending through moorland and back into the lush rainforest. The trail is scenic and offers a chance to reflect on your journey.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate. This marks the successful completion of your climb on Mount Kilimanjaro.
