Overview of the Lemosho route

The Lemosho Route is one of the most popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. It offers breathtaking scenery, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a high summit success rate.

Starting on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route is available in 6, 7, and 8-day itineraries, making it a great choice for trekkers seeking a rewarding mountain adventure.

One of the highlights of this route is Cathedral Peak, one of the highest points of the Shira Volcano, standing at 3,872 m (12,703 ft). During your climb with Nabaki Safaris, you can enjoy an acclimatization hike to Cathedral Peak and experience spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s stunning landscapes.

Another remarkable feature of the Lemosho Route is its unique vegetation. You will encounter the giant groundsel plants, known scientifically as Dendrosenecio kilimanjari, which are found naturally on Mount Kilimanjaro and create an extraordinary landscape.

At Nabaki Safaris, we are committed to providing a safe, memorable, and rewarding Kilimanjaro climbing experience. Our experienced mountain guides prioritize your safety, proper acclimatization, and the highest standards of mountain support.

Safety First: To ensure a safe and enjoyable climbing experience, Nabaki Safaris accepts participants aged 12โ€“70 years for our mountain expeditions.

Expert recommendation

The Lemosho Route is one of our favorite Kilimanjaro climbing routes. Its breathtaking scenery and excellent acclimatization profile make it a great choice for both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers.

Nabaki Safaris offers three Lemosho itineraries: 6, 7, and 8 days. Each option provides a unique experience depending on your fitness level, trekking experience, and time available.

6-Day Lemosho Route

Best for experienced high-altitude trekkers.

This itinerary is recommended for climbers who have recently completed multi-day hikes above 4,000 m (13,100 ft). It is a shorter, more demanding option that requires good fitness and previous altitude experience.

7-Day Lemosho Route

Best for trekkers with some outdoor experience.

The 7-day itinerary offers a good balance between acclimatization, trekking challenges, and time on the mountain. It is suitable for climbers with outdoor trekking experience but limited exposure to high altitudes.

The first days feature relatively gentle hikes, helping you conserve energy for the more challenging sections ahead. It is a popular choice for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers.

8-Day Lemosho Route

Best for beginners and climbers seeking more time to acclimatize.

The 8-day itinerary provides an additional day for acclimatization and adjustment to the trekking routine. It is an excellent option for those who are new to mountain trekking or have not hiked in a while.

Unlike the shorter itineraries, this route begins in the beautiful tropical rainforest, offering more time to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes.

Our Expert Recommendation

At Nabaki Safaris, we recommend the 8-day Lemosho Route for climbers who have little or no previous high-altitude trekking experience. The additional day provides more time for acclimatization and a more gradual introduction to the mountain.

Regardless of your chosen itinerary, Kilimanjaro requires a reasonable level of fitness. Proper preparation, experienced guides, and a well-planned acclimatization schedule are essential for a successful climb.

Lemosho Route Detailed Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a friendly representative from Nabaki Safaris and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, including cozy rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Wi-Fi. In the evening, you will attend a pre-climb briefing with our experienced team, who will explain the trekking arrangements and ensure you are fully prepared for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. Additional charges may apply for separate individual transfers. To avoid extra costs, we recommend coordinating your group's arrival and departure times.

PLEASE NOTE: Hotel check-in begins at 2:00 PM.

In the morning, your guide and mountain support team will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before driving approximately 3โ€“4 hours to Londorossi Gate, the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing the registration process and obtaining climbing permits, you will continue by 4WD vehicle to the high-altitude drop-off point at approximately 3,600 m (11,811 ft). From here, you will enjoy your first breathtaking views of the beautiful Shira Plateau.

From the drop-off point, you will begin a gentle trek towards Shira 1 Camp. The trail involves a gradual altitude gain and is relatively easy, allowing your body to start adjusting to the mountain environment. Upon arrival at camp, the Nabaki Safaris mountain crew will have your tents ready and prepare a freshly cooked dinner as you relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

PLEASE NOTE: This is your first day at high altitude. To support proper acclimatization, we recommend following these guidelines:

  • Drink approximately 3โ€“4 litres of water throughout the day, taking small amounts frequently.

  • Follow your guide's advice on maintaining a slow and steady walking pace.

  • Discuss altitude sickness prevention medication with your doctor before the climb.

  • Inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, or other symptoms of altitude sickness.

You may experience mild discomfort during your first night at this elevation as your body adjusts to the reduced oxygen levels. Rest well, stay hydrated, and communicate any symptoms to your mountain guide.

Trekking Information

  • Trekking time: 1โ€“2 hours

  • Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

  • Starting altitude: 3,600 m (11,811 ft)

  • Destination: Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, you will leave Shira 1 Camp and begin a gentle trek towards Shira 2 Camp. The trail is relatively easy, allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of the African savannah and Kilimanjaro's unique alpine vegetation. Weather permitting, you may also enjoy beautiful views of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain.

Along the way, your Nabaki Safaris mountain guides may offer an optional hike to Cathedral Peak (3,872 m / 12,703 ft), one of the highest points of the extinct Shira Volcano. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and landscapes. This hike is non-technical but requires some extra effort. If the weather is unfavorable or you prefer to skip it, you can continue directly to Shira 2 Camp without affecting your acclimatization schedule.

Upon arrival at Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), you will enjoy lunch and take approximately two hours to rest. Later, you will join an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, ascending to approximately 4,270 m (14,009 ft) before returning to camp. This hike follows the important principle of climbing high and sleeping low, helping your body gradually adapt to the altitude.

PLEASE NOTE: Acclimatization hikes are an important part of your Kilimanjaro climb. They help your body adjust to higher elevations and improve your chances of reaching the summit successfully. Follow your guide's pace and report any symptoms of altitude sickness immediately.

Acclimatization Hike

  • Starting point: Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,631 ft)

  • Highest point: 4,270 m (14,009 ft)

  • Distance: 2 km (1.2 miles)

  • Hiking time: 1โ€“2 hours

Daily Trekking Information

  • Trekking distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)

  • Trekking time: 3โ€“4 hours

  • Destination: Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 Camp and begin your trek towards Lava Tower, one of the key acclimatization points on the Lemosho Route. This section involves several ascents and descents, taking you to an altitude of approximately 4,600 m (15,091 ft) above sea level.

As you gain altitude, you may experience some physical discomfort due to the reduced oxygen levels. However, this is an important part of your acclimatization process. Upon reaching Lava Tower, you will spend approximately 1โ€“2 hours resting and enjoying lunch. This helps your body adjust to the higher altitude before continuing the journey.

After lunch, you will descend towards Barranco Camp (approximately 3,960 m / 12,992 ft). Along the way, you will experience changing mountain landscapes and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. Upon arrival, you will have an opportunity to relax and enjoy the impressive sight of the famous Barranco Wall, a spectacular rock formation that you will climb the following morning.

After an early breakfast, you will begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route. We recommend starting early to avoid crowds and enjoy a smoother climb. Although the wall looks steep and impressive, the trail is manageable and does not require technical climbing skills. The ascent usually takes about one hour.

Once you reach the top, you will have time to rest, take photos, and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.

You will then continue towards Karanga Camp along a trail with several ascents and descents. Your Nabaki Safaris guides will maintain a comfortable walking pace to help you manage your energy and adjust to the altitude.

Upon arrival at Karanga Camp (3,960 m / 12,992 ft), you will enjoy a freshly prepared warm lunch and take some time to relax.

Later in the afternoon, you will take an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp, gaining approximately 310 m (1,017 ft) in elevation before returning to Karanga Camp. This additional hike helps your body prepare for the higher altitude ahead.

PLEASE NOTE: Take your time when climbing Barranco Wall and follow your guide's instructions. Walk slowly, drink enough water, and report any signs of altitude sickness to your guide.

ย

After a warm and hearty breakfast, you will leave Karanga Camp and begin your trek towards Barafu Camp, your final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail gradually climbs through an alpine desert landscape, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp (approximately 4,673 m / 15,331 ft), the Nabaki Safaris mountain crew will have your tents and sleeping arrangements ready. You will enjoy a warm meal and receive a final briefing from your guides about the summit attempt, including safety instructions and what to expect during the night climb.

The remainder of the day will be dedicated to resting, eating well, and preparing your equipment for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.

It is important to get as much rest as possible because you will begin your summit attempt around midnight. Your guides will ensure you are properly prepared before the challenging journey ahead.

PLEASE NOTE: Keep warm, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary physical activity. Follow your guides' instructions and inform them if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.

Daily Trekking Information

  • Trekking distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)

  • Trekking time: 4โ€“5 hours

  • Starting point: Karanga Camp (3,960 m / 12,992 ft)

  • Destination: Barafu Camp (approximately 4,673 m / 15,331 ft)

  • Summit target: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)

The most exciting and challenging day of your Kilimanjaro adventure begins around midnight. After a light meal and final preparations at Barafu Camp, you will start your summit ascent towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.

The climb is physically demanding because of the high altitude, cold temperatures, and steep terrain. Your experienced Nabaki Safaris mountain guides will lead the way at a slow and steady pace, providing encouragement and monitoring your well-being throughout the ascent.

After reaching Stella Point (5,756 m / 18,885 ft), you will continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. Once at the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement, take memorable photographs, and enjoy the incredible views from the Roof of Africa.

After celebrating at the summit, you will begin your descent to Barafu Camp, where you will have a short rest and enjoy some refreshments. You will then continue descending to Millennium Camp (approximately 3,950 m / 12,959 ft), where your mountain crew will have prepared your accommodation and dinner.

PLEASE NOTE: Descending Kilimanjaro requires careful attention, as fatigue and loose volcanic gravel can increase the risk of slips and injuries. Follow your guide's instructions, walk carefully, and wear properly fitted hiking boots to protect your feet and toenails. Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell or unusually exhausted.

Daily Trekking Information

  • Trekking distance: Approximately 15 km (9.3 miles)

  • Trekking time: 8โ€“12 hours

  • Summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)

  • Destination: Millennium Camp (approximately 3,950 m / 12,959 ft)

After a restful night at Millennium Camp, surrounded by the beautiful tropical rainforest, you will wake up feeling refreshed and proud of your achievement in reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Following a warm breakfast, you will begin your final descent towards Mweka Gate, the exit point of Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail passes through lush rainforest, where you may spot unique plants, beautiful birds, and other wildlife along the way.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit formalities and officially receive recognition for completing your Kilimanjaro adventure. The Nabaki Safaris team will celebrate your achievement, and you will have an opportunity to share your experience in our guestbook.

You will then receive your commemorative Kilimanjaro climbing certificate before our team transfers you back to your hotel. This is the perfect time to relax, enjoy a warm shower, and celebrate your successful climb.
