5 Days Umbwe Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Elevation: 1,600m to 2,850m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Your journey begins at Umbwe Gate, where you complete park registration before starting the trek. The trail immediately enters a dense rainforest, characterized by thick vegetation, towering trees, and a narrow, steep path.
This is one of the most intense first days on any Kilimanjaro route, as the ascent begins quickly with very little gradual buildup. The forest is rich in biodiversity, and you may spot monkeys, birds, and other wildlife along the way.
After several hours of continuous climbing, you arrive at Umbwe Camp, located within the forest zone. The atmosphere here is quiet and remote, offering a true wilderness experience. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 2,850m to 3,900m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
On the second day, the trail continues to climb steeply as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes thinner, and the landscape opens up, revealing dramatic views of valleys and ridges.
The route follows a narrow ridge with breathtaking scenery on both sides, making this one of the most visually striking sections of the climb. As you gain altitude, the air becomes thinner, and the terrain more rugged.
You eventually connect with the Machame Route and arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on the mountain. Surrounded by giant senecio plants and located beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, this camp offers stunning views and a chance to rest before the next challenge.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that requires some scrambling. Although it may look intimidating at first, it is manageable with guidance and is often considered one of the most exciting parts of the trek.
After reaching the top, you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views. The trail then descends into valleys before ascending again toward Karanga Camp.
This is a shorter trekking day, allowing for better acclimatization. The landscape continues to showcase alpine desert features, with rocky terrain and minimal vegetation. Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, you will have time to rest and prepare for the final ascent stages.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
This day involves a steady climb to Barafu Camp, located on a rocky ridge. The name “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, and the environment here reflects the harsh, high-altitude conditions you are approaching.
The terrain is dry, cold, and exposed, with strong winds often present. Upon arrival, you will have an early dinner and then rest in preparation for the summit attempt later that night.
Your guides will provide detailed instructions for the summit climb, including pacing, safety tips, and what to expect. Rest is crucial, as the next stage is the most demanding part of the journey.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit) → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
The summit attempt begins around midnight, under the stars. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the climb, as you ascend steep scree slopes in freezing temperatures.
Slow, steady steps are key as you make your way to Stella Point on the crater rim. From here, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Reaching the summit is a truly unforgettable achievement, offering breathtaking views and a deep sense of accomplishment.
After spending a short time at the top, you begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest, before continuing down through different vegetation zones to Mweka Gate.
This is a long and challenging day, but completing it marks the successful end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
