Overview of the Machame Route
The Machame Route, popularly known as the Whiskey Route, is one of the most scenic and popular trails for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Nabaki Safaris organizes guided expeditions along this beautiful route, which begins in the lush tropical rainforest on the southern slopes of the mountain.
The Machame Route is available in 6-day and 7-day climbing options. The 7-day itinerary is generally recommended because it provides more time for altitude acclimatization, giving climbers a better opportunity to adjust to the changing altitude and improve their chances of reaching the summit.
This route is suitable for adventurous beginners and experienced hikers who are physically prepared for the challenge. Along the way, you will experience Kilimanjaro’s diverse climatic zones, enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery, and climb the famous Barranco Wall.
You will also encounter unique high-altitude vegetation, including the remarkable giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari), one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive plant species.
With spectacular landscapes, varied terrain, and rewarding summit views, the Machame Route offers an unforgettable Mount Kilimanjaro climbing experience with Nabaki Safaris.
Safety First: Climbers must meet the applicable age requirements and be physically prepared for high-altitude trekking. Please contact our team for guidance on age eligibility and preparation before booking.
Expert recommendation
When choosing between the 6-day and 7-day Machame Route, it is important to consider your fitness level, hiking experience, and ability to adapt to high altitude.
The 7-day Machame Route is generally recommended because it allows more time for acclimatization, giving your body a better opportunity to adjust to the changing altitude. It also includes an additional overnight stay at Karanga Camp before continuing towards Barafu Camp and the summit.
The 6-day Machame Route follows a shorter schedule and skips the overnight stay at Karanga Camp. This makes the itinerary more demanding, with less time for altitude adjustment. It may be considered by experienced trekkers with suitable prior acclimatization, although it still carries a greater risk of altitude-related difficulties.
At Nabaki Safaris, we encourage climbers to choose the 7-day itinerary for a more gradual ascent and a better acclimatization profile.
Our Recommendation: If you have enough time, choose the 7-day Machame Route. Allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude can improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak safely and successfully.

Machame Route Detailed Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a friendly Nabaki Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, depending on your itinerary.
Your hotel provides comfortable accommodation with essential facilities, including cozy rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, swimming pool access, and Wi-Fi to help you relax after your journey.
In the evening, you will attend a pre-climb briefing with our experienced mountain team. During this meeting, our guides will explain the climbing itinerary, review safety procedures, check your personal trekking equipment, and ensure you are fully prepared for your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
Airport Transfers: Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for members of the same travelling group. Additional charges may apply for separate transfers or individual airport pickups. We recommend coordinating your arrival and departure schedules to avoid unnecessary transportation costs.
PLEASE NOTE: Standard hotel check-in time is 2:00 PM. Early check-in is subject to hotel availability and may incur an additional charge.
After breakfast, your Nabaki Safaris mountain guide and support crew will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before driving to Machame Gate, the starting point of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
At the park entrance, our team will complete the necessary registration, obtain climbing permits, and finalize the required park formalities. Once everything is ready, you will begin your trek towards Machame Camp.
The trail takes you through Kilimanjaro's beautiful tropical rainforest, surrounded by tall trees, lush vegetation, and unique wildlife. The forest can be wet, and occasional tropical showers are common, so we recommend carrying a waterproof jacket, rain trousers, and spare clothing.
Upon reaching Machame Camp, our crew will have prepared your tents and campsite. You can relax, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and prepare for the next day's trek.
Important Altitude Acclimatization Tips
This is your first day trekking at higher altitude, so it is important to begin following good acclimatization practices:
Stay Hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the day. Your guide will advise you on suitable daily fluid intake.
Walk Slowly: Maintain a comfortable pace and avoid unnecessary physical exertion.
Follow Your Guide's Advice: Pay attention to safety instructions and daily health checks.
Report Symptoms: Inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, or breathing difficulties.
Some climbers may experience altitude-related symptoms as their bodies adjust to the reduced oxygen levels. Our guides monitor climbers throughout the expedition and provide assistance when necessary.
If you are considering altitude-sickness medication, consult your doctor before travelling to determine whether it is suitable for you.
Trekking Information
Destination: Machame Camp
Trekking Time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles)
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camping tents
After breakfast, you will continue your Kilimanjaro adventure towards Shira Camp, your second high-altitude campsite. During this stage, you will gradually leave the rainforest behind and enter the beautiful heath and moorland zone.
As you ascend, the landscape opens up, revealing spectacular views of the Shira Plateau and the surrounding mountain scenery. Although the trail is not particularly technical, the increasing altitude may make walking more challenging. Our Nabaki Safaris guides will encourage you to maintain a slow and steady pace while monitoring how your body responds to the altitude.
Upon arrival at Shira Camp, you will enjoy a freshly prepared lunch and have time to relax. Later in the afternoon, you will take an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower before returning to Shira Camp for a hot dinner and overnight rest.
Acclimatization Hike
This afternoon hike follows the important climbing principle of "Climb High, Sleep Low." By walking to a higher elevation and returning to a lower campsite to sleep, you give your body additional exposure to altitude, helping it gradually adapt to the reduced oxygen levels.
Acclimatization hikes are an important part of your Kilimanjaro preparation. However, they do not eliminate the risk of altitude sickness, so always follow your guide's instructions and report any symptoms immediately.

Although the trek can be challenging due to the increasing altitude, spending approximately 1–2 hours at Lava Tower is important for acclimatization. Our Nabaki Safaris team will arrange lunch at the top of Lava Tower before you begin your descent.
After lunch, you will descend to Barranco Camp, where you will enjoy breathtaking views of the famous Barranco Wall, known for its impressive height and steep slopes. Tomorrow, you will climb this iconic wall. Although it looks challenging from a distance, the hiking trail is manageable with the guidance of our experienced mountain crew.
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
Highest Point: Lava Tower (4,600 m / 15,088 ft)
Destination: Barranco Camp
As you gain altitude, you may experience some physical discomfort due to the reduced oxygen levels. However, this is an important part of your acclimatization process. Upon reaching Lava Tower, you will spend approximately 1–2 hours resting and enjoying lunch. This helps your body adjust to the higher altitude before continuing the journey.
After lunch, you will descend towards Barranco Camp (approximately 3,960 m / 12,992 ft). Along the way, you will experience changing mountain landscapes and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. Upon arrival, you will have an opportunity to relax and enjoy the impressive sight of the famous Barranco Wall, a spectacular rock formation that you will climb the following morning.
After an early breakfast, you will begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. We recommend starting as early as possible to avoid crowds from other trekking groups. The climb takes approximately one hour and is not as difficult as it may appear. Once at the top, you will have time to rest, enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, and take photos with the magnificent Kibo Volcano in the background.
You will then continue towards Karanga Camp, following a trail with several ascents and descents. Although this section can be challenging, our experienced Nabaki Safaris mountain guides will maintain a comfortable pace to help you enjoy the trek safely.
Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, you will enjoy a warm lunch before continuing your ascent to Barafu Camp. Here, you will be served a hot dinner and receive a briefing from your guides in preparation for the summit attempt.
The remainder of the day is dedicated to resting and getting enough sleep. An early night is essential, as your exciting journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro begins around midnight.
Trekking Time: 8–10 hours
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
Destination: Barafu Camp
Your summit adventure begins around midnight as you depart from Barafu Camp and start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.
Although the trail is not technically difficult, the extreme altitude makes this the most physically demanding part of your Kilimanjaro climb. Our experienced Nabaki Safaris mountain guides will accompany and support you throughout the ascent, carefully monitoring your physical condition and well-being to help you reach the summit safely.
After reaching the magnificent Uhuru Peak, you will have time to celebrate your achievement, take memorable photographs, and enjoy the breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa. If conditions and your energy levels permit, you may also visit a nearby glacier.
Following your summit success, you will descend to Barafu Camp, where you will enjoy a short rest of approximately two hours. You will then continue your descent to Millennium Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by the beautiful mountain environment.
Important Note: Descending Kilimanjaro requires great care, as fatigue and loose terrain can increase the risk of falls and injuries. Pay close attention to your footing, follow your guides' instructions, and protect your toes and toenails during the descent.
Trekking Time: 8–12 hours
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)
Summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)
Destination: Millennium Camp
Millennium Camp is nestled within the beautiful tropical rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro. After waking up, you will enjoy the refreshing feeling of being at a lower altitude and the incredible satisfaction of having successfully reached the summit of Africa's highest mountain.
After a warm breakfast, you will begin your final descent towards Mweka Gate, passing through the lush rainforest while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.
Upon arrival at the gate, the entire Nabaki Safaris team will congratulate you on your successful Kilimanjaro summit. You will also have an opportunity to share your climbing experience and leave your comments in our guestbook.
To celebrate your achievement, you will receive your official commemorative Kilimanjaro summit certificates at our office. Finally, our team will arrange a comfortable transfer back to your hotel, where you can relax and celebrate the unforgettable accomplishment of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
