Overview of the Marangu route
The Marangu Route, popularly known as the Coca-Cola Route, is the oldest and one of the most popular trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This historic route follows the path of Hans Meyer, who made the first recorded successful ascent of Kilimanjaro in 1889.
Located within Kilimanjaro National Park, the Marangu Route takes you through the mountain’s spectacular climatic zones, beginning in lush tropical rainforest and progressing through moorland, alpine desert, and the icy summit zone.
One of the route’s biggest advantages is that it is the only Kilimanjaro route offering overnight accommodation in mountain huts rather than camping tents. These shared dormitory-style huts provide shelter and added comfort throughout your adventure.
Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is a particularly attractive option during the rainy seasons, as the mountain huts provide protection from rain and wet conditions. The main rainy periods are generally from mid-March to late May and from late October to late December.
Nabaki Safaris offers 5-day and 6-day Marangu Route climbing packages. We recommend the 6-day itinerary because the additional acclimatization day allows your body more time to adjust to the altitude, improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.
Safety and Age Requirements
Your safety is our priority. Our Kilimanjaro climbing adventures are supported by experienced mountain guides and established safety procedures.
For this expedition, participants must be between 12 and 70 years old, subject to appropriate fitness and medical suitability.
Climb the historic Marangu Route with Nabaki Safaris and experience the beauty, history, and adventure of reaching the Roof of Africa.
Expert recommendation
The Marangu Route offers beautiful scenic views of the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, allowing climbers to experience the mountain’s diverse landscapes and natural beauty.
However, one consideration is that the route follows the same trail for both the ascent and descent. This means there is less variety in scenery compared to other Kilimanjaro routes, and the trail can become crowded, especially during peak climbing seasons.
Although the 5-day Marangu itinerary may seem like an attractive option, it is considerably more challenging because of the limited time available for altitude acclimatization.
At Nabaki Safaris, we recommend the 6-day Marangu Route for beginners and climbers who prefer a more gradual ascent. The additional day provides valuable time for acclimatization and helps improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Alternatively, climbers looking for even better acclimatization opportunities can consider longer itineraries of 7 days or more on other Kilimanjaro routes, such as Machame, Lemosho, or Rongai.
Our recommendation: Take your time, acclimatize properly, and enjoy every step of your Kilimanjaro adventure with Nabaki Safaris.

Welcome to Tanzania! Your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure with Nabaki Safaris begins here.
In the morning, your Nabaki Safaris mountain guide and support crew will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure. You will then travel by vehicle to Marangu Gate (1,860 m / 6,102 ft), the eastern entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park.
Upon arrival, you will complete the necessary registration procedures, obtain your climbing permits, and register with the park's rescue services. After everything is ready, your trek will begin towards Mandara Hut (2,720 m / 8,922 ft).
The trail takes you through a beautiful tropical rainforest filled with unique vegetation, birds, and wildlife. Rain showers are common in this area, so we recommend carrying a waterproof jacket, raincoat, and an extra set of clothes.
When you arrive at Mandara Hut, our mountain support crew will welcome you and prepare a freshly cooked lunch. Throughout the Marangu Route, you will spend your nights in comfortable mountain huts, making this route an excellent choice for climbers who prefer hut accommodation instead of camping tents.
Important Acclimatization Advice
This is your first day at high altitude, so proper acclimatization is essential. To help your body adjust to the changing altitude, follow these recommendations:
Drink approximately 3โ4 litres of water daily, unless your medical team advises otherwise. Drink regularly throughout the day.
Walk slowly and maintain a comfortable trekking pace.
Follow your guide's instructions and allow your body enough time to adapt.
Discuss altitude-sickness prevention medication with your doctor before the climb. Do not take medication without appropriate medical advice.
Inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathing difficulties.
You may experience some discomfort during the night as your body adjusts to the reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations. Our Nabaki Safaris guides will monitor your condition and provide assistance whenever necessary. Never ignore symptoms of altitude sickness.

After an early breakfast, you will leave Mandara Hut (2,720 m / 8,922 ft) and continue your trek towards Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,204 ft), your second mountain camp on the Marangu Route.
As you climb higher, the landscape gradually changes from tropical rainforest to open moorland, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of two of Kilimanjaro's volcanic peaks: Kibo and Mawenzi.
After enjoying lunch and taking some time to rest, you will undertake an important acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut, gaining approximately 200 metres in altitude. This additional hike helps your body adapt to the increasing elevation before returning to Horombo Hut for a freshly prepared dinner.
Important Acclimatization Advice
At Nabaki Safaris, we strongly encourage all climbers to take acclimatization hikes seriously. Although this is a relatively short and manageable walk, it plays an important role in preparing your body for higher elevations.
Following the principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower helps your body adjust to the altitude and can improve your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak.
Always maintain a slow and comfortable pace, drink enough water, and inform your mountain guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.

Although the trail is not technically difficult, the extreme altitude and cold temperatures make this the most demanding part of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Every step requires determination, patience, and careful energy management.
Throughout the summit ascent, your experienced Nabaki Safaris mountain guides will provide close support, monitor your physical condition, and help you maintain a safe and comfortable pace.
Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you will celebrate your incredible achievement, take memorable photographs, and enjoy the breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa. If weather conditions and your energy levels permit, you may also visit a nearby glacier.
After celebrating your summit success, you will descend to Kibo Hut for approximately two hours of rest before continuing your journey down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,204 ft), where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night.
Important Safety Advice
Descending Mount Kilimanjaro requires special attention because fatigue, loose gravel, and steep terrain can increase the risk of falls and injuries.
Our Nabaki Safaris guides will assist you throughout the descent. We recommend that you:
Watch your footing carefully, especially on loose and rocky sections.
Walk slowly and follow your guide's instructions.
Protect your toes and toenails by wearing properly fitted trekking boots.
