Overview of the Rongai route

The Rongai Route is one of the quieter trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a unique climbing experience with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery. Starting on the northern side of the mountain, the route passes through coniferous forests, diverse vegetation and spectacular high-altitude landscapes before descending via the Marangu Route.

Along the way, climbers enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, unique Kilimanjaro plants, and the beautiful landscapes of northern Tanzania. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a peaceful trekking experience and unforgettable mountain scenery with Nabaki Safaris.

Safety First: Nabaki Safaris welcomes climbers aged 12–70 years, subject to individual fitness and medical suitability.

Expert recommendation

The Rongai Route is available in 6-day and 7-day climbing programs. We recommend the 7-day option, especially for beginners, as it allows better acclimatization, improves comfort and increases your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The 6-day option is best suited for experienced climbers with previous high-altitude trekking or acclimatization experience.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a representative from Nabaki Safaris and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers all the essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including cozy rooms, hot showers, friendly and attentive staff, a swimming pool, and internet access.

In the evening, you will attend a pre-climb briefing with the Nabaki Safaris team. Our representatives will provide important information about your upcoming adventure, answer any questions, and ensure that you are fully prepared for the climb.

Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for all members of your group. Additional charges may apply for individual transfers. To avoid extra costs, we recommend coordinating your group's arrival and departure schedules.

PLEASE NOTE: Hotel check-in begins at 2:00 PM.

In the morning, your professional mountain guide and support crew from Nabaki Safaris will meet you at your hotel for a short briefing before departing by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park's northern entrance, Nalemuru Gate (2,020 m / 6,627 ft).

Upon arrival, you will complete the necessary registration procedures, obtain your climbing permits, and register with the park's search and rescue service. Once all formalities are completed, your trekking adventure will begin with an ascent to Simba Camp (2,671 m / 8,763 ft).

Today's trek takes you through beautiful montane forest along Kilimanjaro's northern slopes. The hike is moderately paced, allowing you to enjoy the surrounding scenery while gradually gaining altitude. Remember to walk slowly, maintain a comfortable pace, and follow your guide's instructions.

Upon reaching Simba Camp, our mountain support team will have prepared your campsite, set up your tents, and arranged everything needed for a comfortable overnight stay. A freshly prepared dinner will be served as you relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.

Important Altitude Acclimatization Advice

As this will be your first day at high altitude, it is important to take the following precautions throughout your climb:

    • Stay hydrated: Drink approximately 3–4 liters of water daily, taking small amounts frequently throughout the day, unless your medical professional advises otherwise.

    • Altitude sickness prevention: Discuss altitude-related medication with your doctor before travelling. If medication is recommended, follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and timing.

    • Monitor your health: Mild headaches, nausea, and difficulty sleeping can occur as your body adjusts to the altitude. Inform your mountain guide immediately if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.

    • Walk slowly: Maintain a steady, comfortable pace and avoid unnecessary exertion to support proper acclimatization.

Your safety and well-being are our priority. Our experienced guides will monitor your condition throughout the trek and provide assistance whenever necessary.

Today's trek takes you higher along Kilimanjaro's northern slopes, passing through beautiful alpine landscapes with spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. As you gain altitude, the vegetation gradually becomes sparser, revealing the impressive mountain scenery.

If the weather is clear, you will enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Volcano, one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones.

This stage is more physically demanding than the previous day's hike, so it is important to maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and follow your guide's instructions. Upon arrival at Kikilewa Camp, our Nabaki Safaris mountain crew will have your tents ready and prepare a warm meal.

We recommend taking time to rest and relax at camp to allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. Enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings and prepare for the next stage of your adventure.

Today's trek takes you through spectacular alpine desert landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Upon arrival at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you will enjoy lunch followed by approximately two hours of rest to recover from the morning's trek.

Later in the afternoon, you will embark on an acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Volcano, gaining approximately 200 m (656 ft) in altitude. This additional hike is designed to help your body gradually adapt to the increasing elevation.

The acclimatization trek is relatively easy and takes you to a higher altitude before returning to Mawenzi Tarn Camp. This important stage of the climb follows the principle of climbing high and sleeping low, helping improve your body's adaptation to altitude and increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

After completing the acclimatization hike, you will descend back to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, where a freshly prepared dinner will be served. Enjoy a relaxing evening and get plenty of rest before continuing your Kilimanjaro adventure with the Nabaki Safaris team.

After an early breakfast at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you will begin your trek towards Kibo Hut Camp (4,720 m / 15,482 ft), your final base camp before the summit attempt.

Today's route takes you across the spectacular alpine desert, where the lush vegetation gradually disappears and the landscape transforms into a rocky, semi-desert environment. Along the way, you will enjoy impressive views of Kilimanjaro's rugged terrain and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Although the trek is not particularly difficult technically, the increasing altitude makes it important to maintain a slow, steady pace. Avoid rushing and conserve your energy, as you will need your strength for the challenging summit attempt later that night.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut Camp, the Nabaki Safaris mountain crew will arrange your accommodation and prepare your meals. You will have time to rest, enjoy an early dinner, and receive a final briefing from your mountain guide about the summit ascent.

We strongly recommend getting as much rest as possible, avoiding unnecessary physical activity, and staying well hydrated. You will be waking up around midnight to begin your final ascent towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.

This is an important preparation day, so take it easy, follow your guide's instructions, and get ready for the most exciting part of your Kilimanjaro adventure!

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Your summit attempt begins around midnight, departing from Kibo Hut Camp (4,720 m / 15,482 ft) towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.

The climb takes place during the night, allowing you to reach the summit around sunrise. Although the trail does not involve technical climbing, the extreme altitude, cold temperatures, and long hours of trekking make this a physically demanding experience.

To ensure your safety, Nabaki Safaris will arrange for climbers to be closely accompanied by experienced mountain guides. Climbers will be monitored throughout the ascent, with guides paying particular attention to their physical condition and signs of altitude sickness.

As you approach the summit, you will pass Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Upon reaching the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement, take photographs, and enjoy the incredible views from the Roof of Africa. Depending on weather conditions, safety considerations, and available time, you may also have the opportunity to view the nearby glaciers.

After celebrating your successful summit, you will begin the descent to Kibo Hut Camp, where you will take a short break of approximately two hours to rest and enjoy some refreshments.

You will then continue descending towards Horombo Camp (3,720 m / 12,205 ft), where you will spend the night. Upon arrival, the Nabaki Safaris mountain crew will prepare your dinner, allowing you to relax and recover after this unforgettable achievement.

Important Safety Advice for the Descent

Descending Kilimanjaro can be just as demanding as climbing up. Fatigue, loose gravel, and uneven terrain increase the risk of slips, falls, and injuries.

Please keep the following precautions in mind:

    • Watch your footing carefully, especially on loose and rocky sections.

    • Descend slowly and follow your guide's instructions.

    • Pay attention to your toes and toenails, as prolonged downhill walking can cause painful injuries.

    • Keep drinking water and take regular breaks when necessary.

    • Inform your guide immediately if you experience dizziness, severe headaches, nausea, or unusual weakness.

Your safety remains our priority throughout the journey. Our experienced mountain guides and support crew will accompany you during the descent to ensure you reach Horombo Camp safely.
